Imagine Standing in the Eastland Wheelhouse
When
the History Center staff began planning The Eastland Disaster:
Chicago’s Titanic exhibit one of the goals was to create
an atmosphere that would bring the Eastland into the
gallery. When the idea of recreating the wheelhouse came to President
& CEO Alberta Adamson she was sure this was what the exhibit
needed. Using one of her many resources, she called upon the talents
of the Kiwanis Club of Wheaton and suggested they build the wheelhouse.
After studying photographs and making calculations several members
set out to build a replica that would reflect the actual wheelhouse
and still fit through the front door of the History Center. The
result is a structure that replicates the wheelhouse that sat
high on the upper deck of the Eastland, putting the finishing
touches on an exhibit that has been enjoyed by hundreds of visitors.
The History Center is grateful to the Kiwanis Club of Wheaton
for taking on this project and most appreciative of the hours
of work necessary to complete it.
Libby Klucina Hruby – In Memoriam
Eastland
survivor, Libby Hruby, passed away on November 6, 2004, just two
months before her 100th birthday. Libby, as everyone knew her,
was just ten years old in 1915 when her life was saved by the
hands of a stranger when the Eastland capsized. Her recollections
of that day were indelibly marked in her memory and her stories
of the disaster and life in Cicero following July 24 created a
vivid picture of the impact the Eastland had on everyone
involved.
Libby was a long-time friend of
Dave and Rose Nelson and the History Center is pleased to have
recorded her oral history. She was a joy to know and will be missed
whenever the Eastland family gathers together. |
